Bayan Muna Rep. Carlos Isagani Zarate and Bayan Muna chairman and former Rep. Neri Colmenares today expressed their fear that the police tried to cover up the death of Genesis ‘Tisoy’ Argoncillo who was arrested by Quezon City police on their anti-tambay campaign a week ago and was found dead in his detention cell last Monday.
Initially the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) claimed that Tisoy died from mere shortness of breath but photos and autopsy findings obtained by media on Thursday, June 21, show otherwise, the picture of Tisoy’s cadaver with multiple bruises over his face and body.
This is also contained in Argoncillo’s death certificate, which was prepared by no other than the medico-legal chief of the PNP Crime Lab: Superintendent Joseph Palmero.which said that the “immediate cause” of his death was “multiple blunt force trauma” applied to his “head, neck, chest, and upper extremities.”
“There is definitely a disconnect between the statement of the QCPD and the medico-legal chief of the PNP. Now the QCPD is saying that Tisoy was beaten up by the other detainees. From all indications, it seems that the QCPD is trying to cover up the real stor behind Tisoy’s death,” said Rep. Zarate.
“Police abuse and brutality is a sad reality in the Philippines and is further aggravated when they are given an excuse to flex their brutal muscles like that in Oplan Tokhang and now in this supposed anti-tambay campaign. Abusive cops also grow more emboldened when the President says he has their back,” said Colmenares.
“It is in this light, that we in Bayan Muna will conduct ‘Know Your Rights Legal Clinics’ in communities to teach residents their rights and prevent police abuse,” added Colmenares.
“We are also calling on the House leadership to expedite the investigation on the ‘anti-tambay’ campaign and the death of Tisoy so that it would not be covered up,” ended Rep. Zarate.###
