Bayan Muna Rep.Carlos Isagani Zarate today hit the plan of House Speaker Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to pull out from the Inter- Parliamentary Union (IPU) for supposed interference with the judicial processes in the Philippines.
“The IPU is not interfering with our country’s judicial processes but is merely voicing out its observations and recommendations on reported attacks against parliamentarians in our country. Speaker Arroyo and other congressional leaders should not be so onion skinned and instead work to show that members of Congress here are free to express their opinions, especially critical ones, and are not being silenced by the government, then and even under the present Duterte administration,” said the progressive solon.
“During the case of the Batasan 6 and even the Makabayan 4, the IPU has lent their voice for the welfare of progressive lawmakers. The IPU’S voice should not be silenced; instead, this should be welcomed by parliamentarians. We will definitely oppose Speaker Arroyo’s proposal and we trust that the Senate would not bow down to her wishes,” ended Rep.Zarate.###
