BAYAN MUNA: NO TO LOWERING OF MINIMUM AGE OF CRIMINAL RESPONSIBILITY
Says it is an anti-children bill
Bayan Muna Chairman Neri Colmenares and Bayan Muna Rep. Carlos Isagani Zarate today said that the recently committee approved bill to lower the minimum age of criminal responsibility is making the problem worse instead of solving it.
“The main justification of the bill is the use of minors by criminal syndicates. the adults are the ones who manipulate the minors. Just because they cannot arrest the adults does not justify punishing the child. Na-victimize na nga sila ng nakakatanda, lalo pa silang pahirapan ng gobyerno. They are victimized twice over,”said Colmenares.
Rep. Zarate meanwhile said that “criminality can only be solved or at least drastically reduced by addressing poverty in the country. Giving jobs to majority of Filipinos through genuine agrarian reform and national industrialization are the keys in solving poverty but sadly the government are not facing them head on,”
“Lowering the minimum age of criminal responsibility to 9 years old would only traumatize minors and ruin their lives. Instead of becomig productive citizens guided by stable families they would be branded as ex-cons at such an early age,”said the Davao-based solon.
“This bill should also not be used to divert attention from the problems buffeting our country today especially of high prices of goods and services,” said Colmenares
“I am urging my colleagues and the Senate to seriously study this bill and consider the ill effects it would do to our children. We should vote no to this anti-children bill” ended Rep.Zarate.#
